High Eyes: Why They Happen & How to Get Rid of Them

Whether you’re heading to a concert or “walking” before the family dinner, your buzz may be more obvious than you expect. “High eyes” are one of the easiest ways to spot someone who’s stoned in public. Fortunately, there are a few methods for getting rid of them.

Learn how to spot the most common signs of high eyes before someone else does.

Signs of High Eyes

High eyes are reasonably hard to spot yourself — after all, it’s happening on your face. If you’re covering up your high, it’s a good idea to check in a mirror or ask a friend to look for potential high-eyes symptoms.

Common signs of weed eyes include:

  • Red or bloodshot eyes
  • Glassy appearance
  • Dilated or enlarged pupils
  • Eyelid tremors

What Causes High Eyes?

Some people falsely claim that high eyes are only caused by smoke. According to this myth, you won’t have to worry about redness if you use edibles or tinctures. However, “weed eyes” are actually caused by your brain’s natural reaction to cannabis, regardless of how you consume it.

Cannabis activates your brain’s cannabinoid receptors, which help regulate emotions, hunger, and blood pressure. This can cause your body to boost the blood flow to your eyes, giving them a red and dilated appearance.

The receptors can also impact your eyelids’ basic functionality, causing minor tremors and altering your blink behavior. This can dry out your eyes, making them appear more red and glassy.

How To Get Rid of High Eyes

“Weed eyes” are a natural bodily response to cannabis. So, there’s no guaranteed way to get rid of them while you’re still stoned. That said, people have had luck using a few different methods:

  • Eye drops: Eye drops can help rehydrate your eyes and decrease the signs of dryness. However, this won’t affect the increased blood flow, and the problem could return within a few minutes. Consider bringing your eye drops with you and re-upping in private.
  • Apply a cold object: Colder temperatures can decrease and regulate blood flow. Gently place a cold item, such as a wet towel or a bag of frozen vegetables, on or near your eyelids. For the best safety, only apply it for about 10 minutes and immediately remove the object if it feels painful or too cold.
  • Stop using weed: This goes without saying, but if you want to get rid of your high eyes, more weed will not help. If the symptoms are becoming too noticeable, consider taking a tolerance break.

While you can use eyedrops and frozen veggies to decrease the signs of high eyes, they won’t make you any less high. So, even if your eyes look fine, you still shouldn’t drive or send that text to your ex.
