Hash vs. Kief: A Quick Handbook

Hash and kief are two words that refer to cannabis concentrates, or products produced by distilling the most desirable parts of the cannabis plant. As a result, these products contain higher proportions of cannabinoids and terpenes, making them more potent than fresh flowers.

Although many use the terms hash and kief interchangeably — and there are some similarities between them — they actually refer to two distinct concentrate products.

A Closer Look at Hash vs. Kief

Kief and hash may both be concentrates, but they look very different from one another. Kief refers to the loose trichomes of the cannabis plant. It’s a fine, powdery substance with a slightly sticky feel. It also often has a greenish tint to it, which is due to the kief containing some of the original plant material in it. Essentially, it’s an unrefined concentrate. If you’ve ever discovered a bit of powder at the bottom of your weed grinder, that’s a form of kief.

Hash (hashish), on the other hand, is a more solid, compressed cannabis concentrate. Where kief looks like dust, hash has a waxy, pasty, or oily consistency. It’s actually a byproduct of exposing kief to heat and pressure.

Key Differences

The difference in their appearances is only the beginning.

Production Methods

You can make kief at home using an herb grinder with a fine mesh screen. The screen allows the trichomes to pass through while filtering out unwanted plant parts.

There are a few ways to make hash, some of which you can do at home. Generally, the process involves applying heat and pressure to the trichomes. A pollen press is one of the most common methods. You can also place kief between a folded piece of parchment paper and press it using a hair straightener.

Uses

Cannabis enthusiasts will be happy to know that kief and hash have a variety of uses. You can sprinkle kief over ground buds in a joint or pipe for a potency boost. You can make cannabutter with it to create a wide range of homemade cannabis edibles. You can also dust it over hash oil-covered cannabis flowers to produce moon rocks.

Hash has some similar applications. For example, you can top the ground buds of your joint or bowl with it. Depending on its form, you can also dab it, add it to a concentrate vaporizer, and more.

Hash vs. Kief High

As concentrates, kief and hash have higher concentrations of cannabinoids and terpenes than fresh flowers, making them more potent. Where kief tends to range between 50% to 80% THC, hash can feature as much as 90% THC.

Tips for Choosing Hash vs. Kief

Here are a few quick facts that can help you decide between the two:

  • Ease of production: Kief is the easiest of the two to make at home
  • Versatility: Hash comes in many forms
  • Goals: If you want the strongest hit of THC, hash may be the better choice
