Choose the Right Containers
Plastic bags may be the first thing that comes to mind for storing your newly purchased buds, but you’ll want to avoid these at all costs. The material has a poor oxygen barrier, so your weed can spoil quickly. It also has a static charge that may pull precious trichomes from your flowers, reducing their potency and flavor.
Instead, glass jars are your best friend for weed storage, with mason jars being one of the most common (and cost-effective) options. The airtight seal prevents oxygen exposure, preserving the freshness of your buds. Glass jars are odor-resistant and won’t steal trichomes. They’re reusable and easy to clean. They also make great storage containers for cannabis concentrates.
Separate by Strain
If you purchase multiple strains, store each one in separate jars. Labels will allow you to find the one you want quickly. That way, you won’t have to open your containers multiple times and expose your buds to oxygen unnecessarily. Separate jars preserve the integrity and flavor of each strain. They also ensure you get the desired effects each time.
Keep Your Weed out of Direct Sunlight
While cannabis degrades naturally over time, exposure to ultraviolet (UV) rays from the sun speeds up the process. To preserve your buds, avoid storing them where they’ll face exposure to direct sunlight. A cupboard or pantry is an ideal location. Alternatively, you can use dark, UV-resistant (instead of clear) glass containers. Either way, you’ll still want to consider other potential external factors that may affect your cannabis.
Consider Temperature and Humidity
The temperature and humidity of your weed storage location matter too. Warm air holds more moisture, which promotes mold and mildew growth. However, warm, dry air degrades your buds faster, sapping their flavor and potency. They’ll also produce a harsher, unpleasant smoke.
Ideally, you’ll want to store your weed in a location with a stable temperature between 60°F and 68°F and a relative humidity level of 59% to 63%.

The freezer might make sense for long-term storage, but frozen trichomes may fall off. Additionally, the thawing process could expose your buds to too much moisture, rendering them too damp to use.
